LiPo Batteries

What to look for when choosing RC LiPo batteries:

• Voltage and cell count: Select a battery with the correct voltage for your model and ESC. A 2S LiPo is 7.4V, while a 3S LiPo is 11.1V. Using a higher voltage than your electronics support can cause serious damage.
• Capacity: Battery capacity is measured in milliamp hours (mAh). Higher-capacity batteries generally provide longer run times but may be larger and heavier.
• Discharge rating: The C rating indicates how much current the battery can deliver. Choose a battery with a suitable discharge rating for your motor, ESC and model. A higher rating can help maintain performance under load.
• Battery size and fit: Check the battery’s length, width, height and weight against your model’s battery compartment or mounting area. Make sure it can be secured safely without restricting movement or damaging the casing.
• Connector type: Confirm that the battery connector matches your ESC or electronic system, or use a suitable adapter. Check polarity carefully before connecting the battery.
• Hardcase or softcase: Hardcase batteries offer additional protection and are commonly used in cars, trucks and other demanding applications. Softcase batteries can be lighter and more flexible but require extra care during installation and use.
• Balance connector: Ensure the battery has the correct balance plug for your charger. The balance lead allows the charger to monitor and equalise each cell safely.
• Intended use: Choose a battery suited to your model and how you use it. Racing, bashing, crawling, boating, flying, construction work and high-speed driving may each benefit from different combinations of capacity, discharge rating, size and weight.
• Model requirements: Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for your car, boat, plane, construction vehicle, tank, bike or other RC model. Some models require specific battery dimensions, connectors, cell counts or discharge ratings.
