Find the right servo for your RC car, plane or boat, whether you’re replacing a worn part or upgrading for stronger, faster control. Servos operate steering, aircraft control surfaces and boat rudders, so choosing one that suits your model is essential.

What to look for when choosing a servo:

• Size and fit: Check the servo’s dimensions, mounting points and output spline to ensure it fits your model and servo horn.
• Torque: This is the servo’s turning strength, usually measured in kg·cm. Larger tyres, heavier models and demanding control surfaces generally require more torque.
• Speed: Usually listed in seconds per 60° of movement. A lower number means a faster response.
• Voltage: Match the servo’s operating voltage to your receiver or BEC power supply. Torque and speed ratings can change with voltage.
• Gears and water resistance: Metal gears offer durability for demanding applications, while a suitable water-resistance rating is useful for boats and vehicles used in wet conditions.

Installation tips: Before fitting the servo horn and connecting the linkage, power up the servo with your transmitter controls centred and trim and sub-trim set to zero. This puts the servo in its neutral position. Always set your transmitter’s travel end points so the servo doesn’t push against mechanical stops or binding linkages. Excessive travel can overload the servo, causing overheating, damaged gears or burnout.

Start with your model’s manual for the recommended servo specifications. For planes, also consider servo weight; for boats, check whether you need a standard rudder servo or a specialised sail winch.
