The TBF-1 , a three-seat torpedo bomber, first flew on August        1941. After entering service with the U.S. Navy, it participated in the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Throughout its World War II career, the Avenger underwent very few design changes, which led to its mass production.

The Royal Naval Air Service operated over 1,000 TBF /TBM series torpedo bombers (known as "Avenger" Mk.I) in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. The "Avenger" Mk.I also served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Another major variant in the Avenger family is the TBM-3, which features a reinforced wing structure and can carry rockets and radar pods.
